5 spec details that quietly raise your unit price

Two quotes for the “same” bottle can differ 20–30%. The gap usually isn’t margin — it’s five spec details buyers under-specify. Here’s where cost quietly hides.

On paper, two quotes for the same glass bottle can differ by 20–30%. The gap usually isn’t the supplier padding margin — it’s a handful of specifications that buyers leave open, forcing the factory to price defensively. Nail these five down and your quote tightens immediately.

1. Glass weight

Two 250 ml bottles can weigh 180 g or 240 g depending on wall thickness. Heavier glass feels premium, but it costs more in raw material, furnace energy and ocean freight. Decide the gram weight on purpose — don’t let it be an accident of whichever mold the factory happens to have.

2. Neck finish and closure match

A non-standard neck means custom closure tooling, a higher MOQ and slower sampling. Wherever the brand allows it, choose a standard neck finish so caps, pumps and droppers come off the shelf instead of off a new mold.

3. Glass color

Flint (clear) and amber run on standard furnaces and price best. Custom colors — cobalt, green tints, opal — often need a dedicated melt, which raises both MOQ and unit price. If color is core to the brand, budget for it; if it isn’t, default to a stock color.

4. Decoration method

A single-color screen print is inexpensive. Multi-color printing, spray coating with a matte finish, hot stamping and decals each add a production pass — and each pass adds cost and lead time. List exactly how many colors and finishes you need so nothing is quoted as a guess.

5. Tooling and MOQ

Custom molds carry a one-off tooling charge and a higher minimum order. Spread over a small run, that tooling can dominate the unit price. Aligning your order quantity with the tooling amortization is often the single biggest lever on cost.

How to keep the quote tight

  • Give a target gram weight, not just a capacity.
  • Choose a standard neck finish wherever the design allows.
  • Default to flint or amber unless the brand truly needs a custom color.
  • Spell out decoration — number of colors, coating and any foiling.
  • Match order quantity to tooling amortization for custom molds.

The cheapest way to lower a glass quote is to remove ambiguity — every unknown a factory has to price defensively lands in your unit cost.
