Six technical points behind a carbonated water pack.
Carbon dioxide diffuses slowly through plastic bottle walls, so a carbonated drink in plastic has a shelf life defined partly by how much fizz it has lost. Glass is impermeable to it, so a sealed glass bottle holds its carbonation for as long as the seal holds. In a product that is essentially water and gas, that is the whole quality argument.
Glass does not let carbon dioxide through
Gas loss through the container wall is a real limit on carbonated drinks in permeable materials, and it sets a shelf life independent of any spoilage. Glass has no such loss, so carbonation is limited only by the closure seal. For sparkling water, where carbonation is most of the product, that difference is directly perceptible.
The closure becomes the only leak path
Once the wall is impermeable, everything depends on the seal at the finish. Liner material, application torque and finish quality determine whether a bottle is still fully carbonated a year later, which makes closure specification and torque control the main quality work in this category.
Pressure rises steeply with temperature
The pressure a carbonated liquid exerts increases substantially between refrigerated and warm conditions, so a bottle that is comfortable in a chiller can be near its working limit in a warm warehouse or a delivery vehicle in summer. Rating is done against the warmest realistic condition, not the storage the producer intends.
Carbonation level is a taste decision with a technical consequence
Markets differ considerably in the intensity of carbonation they prefer, and a bottle serving several markets may be filled at different levels. The glass has to be specified for the highest, which means the pressure rating follows the most heavily carbonated variant rather than the average across the range.
What the label may claim is defined by regulation
Terms describing mineral and spring water, the treatments permitted, and whether carbonation is naturally present or added are all regulated, and the rules differ between markets. Those requirements shape the label content and sometimes the label area, so they are worth confirming before artwork is developed rather than after.
Opening behavior is part of the design
A bottle that foams over when opened wastes product and irritates the customer. Headspace volume, finish geometry and how quickly the closure releases pressure all influence it, and the practical test is opening warm bottles that have been handled rather than cold ones straight from a chiller.
