Firing, color count & regulated areas
Six things that define a fired ceramic decoration.
Ceramic decoration is a glass frit carrying pigment, screen printed onto the container and then fired until it fuses into the surface. The result is not on the glass; it is part of it. That gives durability nothing else matches, at the cost of a limited palette, one production pass per color, and a set of rules about where decoration may sit.
Firing fuses the decoration into the surface
The printed frit is taken through a furnace where it softens and bonds to the glass, leaving a decoration that cannot peel, scratch off or fade in the way applied labels and organic inks eventually do. That is why the technique became the standard for returnable bottles and for glassware expected to be washed repeatedly.
Every color is a separate screen and a separate pass
Ceramic printing lays one color at a time, so a four-color design costs four print stations and four times the handling of a single-color one. Designs that work hardest in this medium use few colors boldly rather than many subtly, and that constraint is worth giving to the designer at the start.
Registration limits what the artwork can attempt
Aligning successive colors on a curved, rotating container is less precise than printing on flat stock, so designs that depend on tight registration between colors, or on fine halftone gradation, do not translate well. Solid shapes with deliberate gaps between colors reproduce reliably and look better for it.
The area near the lip is restricted
Decoration is kept away from the drinking rim and the sealing surface, both because contact with the mouth is regulated and because ink on a sealing surface interferes with the closure. That exclusion zone belongs in the artwork brief as a hard boundary rather than as an approximate margin.
Composition is regulated and worth confirming
Historic ceramic inks used heavy metal pigments, and their use in decoration is now controlled, particularly for surfaces a user may contact. Any ceramic decoration should come with confirmation of its composition against the relevant requirements for the markets it will be sold in, and that documentation belongs in the specification.
Organic printing is the cheaper alternative with a shorter life
Ultraviolet-cured organic inks print in more colors with finer detail and do not need a furnace, so they cost less and offer more freedom. They also abrade and eventually fail under repeated washing. For a single-trip bottle that is a sensible trade; for a bottle that comes back, it usually is not.
